Abstract:

Background and Objective: Thyroid cancer is the most frequent endocrine malignancy in the world and papillary carcinoma is the most frequent thyroid carcinoma. Different markers used for determination of prognosis and VEGFR is one of them. The aim of present study was to determine the expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor (VEGFR) as a prognostic marker in papillary carcinoma.     Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 92 tissue blocks of papillary carcinoma during the period of 2009-2011 in Mostafa Khomeini Hospital, Tehran, Iran. Two tissue sections were prepared. One of them stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin and the other by immunohistochemistry to determine VEGFR expression. Also tumor size and lymph node status was determined. The data analyzed and the p-value of ≤o.o5 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of patients was 39.32± 16.93 years. 40.2% of tumors showed VEGFR expression. 23.9% of patients had lymph node involvement. The average tumor size was 3.6 ± 2.2 cm. No meaningful relationship was observed between VEGFR expression and sex and age of patients and the size of tumor. However, there was a direct significant relationship between the absence of VEGFR expression and uninvolvement of lymph nodes. Conclusion: It seems that reduction in VEGFR expression in papillary carcinoma resulting in reduced numbers of involved lymph node and better prognosis. More complete studies in this field with patient follow up is recommended.

Correlation Between Soluble Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A, Its Receptor 1 And Response To Chemotherapy In Acute Leukemia In Children

Background and Objective: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors (VEGF-R1 and R2) are major regulators of angiogenesis. This study was designed to assess serum levels of VEGF and VEGF-R1 and their prognostic significance in newly diagnosed childhood acute leukemia. Materials and Methods: For this purpose, VEGF and VEGF-R1 were determined using enzyme linked immuno-sorba...

Correlation between hepatocyte growth factor receptor and vascular endothelial growth factor-A in breast carcinoma.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the prognostic value of the vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and hepatocyte growth factor receptor (HGFR, c-met) expressions in homogenous group of breast cancer patients. Tumor samples were collected from 98 patients with invasive ductal breast carcinoma stage II treated with primary surgery. We have observed a strong correlation between VEGF-A...

Papillary Carcinoma of Thyroid Gland in a Patient Treated with Recombinant Growth Hormone

The first successful treatment of growth hormone (GH) deficient children with GH extracted from human pituitary was introduced during late 1950's.  The subsequent availability and use of recombinant GH (rhGH) for different clinical conditions raised the question of whether this new therapeutic modality increases the risk of certain conditions such as leukemia or malignancy.  Herein, we report o...

CD117 Expression in Multinodular Goiter and Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and Its Association with Prognostic Factors

Background and purpose: Multinodular goiter is a benign enlargement of thyroid gland and papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid cancer. Today, immunohistochemical markers can be used in diagnosis and prognosis of tumors. The aim of this study was to compare the expression of CD117 in multinodular goiter and papillary thyroid carcinoma and its association with prognostic...
